Do you know where your produce has been? With much of our produce traveling for days or even weeks from other states or countries, it’s only natural that the produce will have some dirt or other residue (including bacteria) by the time we bring it home from the supermarket. Even organic produce requires washing as it may have dirt on it; plus, it’s likely been touched by several people.
With everything going on in the world right now, the value of cleaning our produce has never been so clear. Here’s what you need to do it:
A large bowl
3 cups of warm water
A cup of white vinegar
12 drops of Lemon essential oil (Wild Orange or Lime essential oil also can work well)
In a large bowl, mix the water, vinegar, and Lemon essential oil. Add your produce. Soak it for a minute to two minutes. Place the produce on a large kitchen towel to dry.
Some produce is not easy to wash. For those items, keep a spray in your kitchen that combines water and Lemon essential oil. Spray it on those hard-to-clean items and then rinse.
A produce wash with essential oils is easy to use, cheap to make, and will leave your produce items tasting even better!
Two more notes: 1) A produce wash is important even for fruits and vegetables with skin, such as avocadoes. 2) Make sure to wash your hands before and after handling and preparing produce.
Enjoy!
